How to Rank a Website on Google: SEO Explained and When to Expect Results

What does it take for a website to rank on Google? The four parts of SEO, when the first results show up, what an SEO service should include and which promises to be wary of.

How to Rank a Website on Google: SEO Explained and When to Expect Results

The website is ready and looks great, but on Google people only find it by the company name. Search for "website development" or "furniture Baku" and competitors show up instead. Sound familiar? In this article we explain in plain language how SEO works, how a website climbs in Google and when it's realistic to expect results.

What is SEO

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the work that helps a website rank higher in search engines. For every query, Google tries to pick the most useful answer out of millions of pages. The job of SEO is to prove to Google that your page is the best answer to that query.

The key difference from ads: when the ad budget runs out, so does the traffic. Rankings earned through SEO keep bringing free customers for months, sometimes years.

What Google looks at: the 4 parts of SEO

1. Technical SEO

Google must be able to read the site easily. That covers fast loading, a mobile version, correct headings and meta tags, a sitemap, no duplicate pages and hreflang for multilingual sites. If there are technical problems, even the best copy won't rank.

2. Content

Every important query needs a page that answers it. If customers search for "order a website", the site needs a separate, detailed page about that service. Questions like "how much does a website cost" are best answered by helpful blog articles. Google rewards text that genuinely answers people's questions, not text stuffed with keywords.

3. Internal linking

Pages on the site should link to each other: from articles to service pages, from services to related articles. This guides visitors and helps Google understand which pages matter most.

4. Trust and backlinks

When other websites link to you, Google treats it as a vote of trust. This includes directories, links from partners' websites, customer reviews and a Google Business Profile. For local businesses the last one is especially important: showing up on the map often brings more calls than the website itself.

When to expect results

SEO is not a quick tool, and it's worth being honest about that:

  • first weeks: technical fixes and Google indexing new pages;
  • 1–3 months: first rankings and impressions for less competitive queries;
  • 3–6 months and beyond: steady growth for the main commercial queries.

Timelines depend on the industry, the competition and the age of the site. A new site usually takes longer because Google doesn't trust it yet.

What an SEO service should include

  • a technical audit of the site and fixing the problems found;
  • keyword research: understanding what customers actually search for;
  • a page and content plan for each query;
  • optimizing headings, meta descriptions and structure;
  • building internal links;
  • tracking rankings, impressions and clicks with Google Search Console and analytics;
  • a monthly report: what was done and what changed.

Promises to be wary of

  • "#1 on Google in a week". Nobody controls Google's algorithm. A promise like this means either ads dressed up as SEO or risky tactics.
  • Thousands of links at once. Spammy links don't lift a site; they can get it penalized by Google.
  • Work without reports. If you can't see what was done and how the results changed, you don't know what you're paying for.

What you can do yourself today

  1. Add your site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap.
  2. Create a Google Business Profile and ask your first customers for reviews.
  3. Check your site in Google PageSpeed.
  4. See whether every service you offer has its own page.

The bottom line

SEO isn't magic, it's consistent work: a technical foundation, useful content, the right links and trust. If your website is still being built, planning SEO from the start costs less. We cover this in more detail in our guide to ordering a website.

Common questions

It depends on the scope: a corporate website and a CRM system differ many times over. After a short call we prepare a written estimate broken down by stages, free of charge.

We move fast: a landing page goes live in as little as 5 working days, a corporate website in 2 weeks, an online store in 4 weeks. A mobile app or a CRM system takes from 3 months. The exact timeline is fixed in the estimate.
